Update on Plans for John Cena Winning Intercontinental Title

Update on Plans for John Cena Winning Intercontinental Title – A new report has revealed that WWE had a major storyline planned involving John Cena, Dominik Mysterio, and GUNTHER leading into Survivor Series 2025. According to The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the plan was for Cena to capture the Intercontinental Championship from Mysterio before facing GUNTHER in what would serve as his retirement match.

WWE’s first Saturday Night’s Main Event as a Peacock exclusive airs on November 1 from Salt Lake City, featuring a stacked lineup including a Triple Threat Match for the Intercontinental Championship. The match will see current champion Dominik Mysterio defend against Penta and Rusev. Dave Meltzer reported that Mysterio was originally expected to retain the title, as the creative direction at the time called for Cena to later defeat him at Survivor Series.

“The fourth match is Dominik Mysterio vs. Penta vs. Rusev for the IC title,” Meltzer noted. “Mysterio would be the favorite given there was the plan a few weeks ago of John Cena winning that title from Mysterio at Survivor Series and defending against Gunther in his retirement match.”

If the plan had gone forward, Cena’s Intercontinental Championship victory would have been a landmark moment, as it’s the one WWE title he has never held in his career. The match against GUNTHER would have likely marked Cena’s final in-ring appearance, closing out a two-decade career with a high-profile showdown against one of WWE’s most dominant competitors.

The confirmed lineup for Saturday Night’s Main Event includes:

  • CM Punk vs. Jey Uso for the vacant World Heavyweight Championship
  • Cody Rhodes (c) vs. Drew McIntyre for the WWE Championship
  • Tiffany Stratton (c) vs. Jade Cargill for the WWE Women’s Championship
  • Dominik Mysterio (c) vs. Penta vs. Rusev for the Intercontinental Championship

Survivor Series: WarGames takes place on November 29, 2025, at Petco Park in San Diego, California, and will feature the return of the WarGames match format. The show will also mark Cena’s final Survivor Series appearance as an active performer.
