WWE Considering John Cena Winning Intercontinental Title – WWE may be adding a historic twist to John Cena’s farewell tour, as new reports suggest that officials have discussed having the 16-time World Champion win the Intercontinental Championship before his retirement. According to the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, this plan would see Cena defeat current champion Dominik Mysterio at Survivor Series.
Dave Meltzer reported that WWE creative has explored the possibility of Cena finally capturing the one title that has eluded him throughout his legendary career. “The idea of Cena winning the IC title from Dominik (the match right now is at Survivor Series) and it being in play for the final match with Gunther has been discussed,” Meltzer wrote. If the plan moves forward, Cena’s victory over Mysterio would not only complete his collection of WWE championships but also set the stage for his last-ever bout.
Cena’s farewell opponent has long been rumored to be former World Heavyweight Champion GUNTHER. WWE officials reportedly see a potential Cena vs. GUNTHER showdown for the Intercontinental Title as the ideal “passing of the torch” moment to close out Cena’s in-ring career. The match is expected to take place at the Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13, which has already generated enormous demand. Reports note that more than 45,000 fans joined the virtual ticket queue for the event, despite the arena’s capacity being only around one-third of that number.
Throughout 2025, Cena’s farewell tour has featured several marquee matches, including bouts against Randy Orton, CM Punk, Brock Lesnar, and a program with Cody Rhodes over the Undisputed WWE Championship. Most recently, Cena secured a victory over AJ Styles at Crown Jewel. With only a few appearances remaining, WWE appears poised to give Cena a historic final chapter — potentially ending his two-decade career with a championship win that completes his legacy.
