A new top contender has officially emerged for the NXT Championship. On the September 15 episode of WWE NXT, Mason Rook outlasted Tony D’Angelo and Saquon Shugars in a high-stakes Triple Threat main event to secure his shot at the top prize.
The competitive main event was born out of chaos surrounding Grayson Waller’s title reign following his victory at NXT Heatwave. After six different competitors staked their claim to the belt, Keanu Carver pitched a six-man tag team match where the winning team would advance to a Triple Threat match the following week.
Rook, D’Angelo, and Shugars earned their spots by defeating Carver, EK Prosper, and Cruz Montana, setting up the fateful main event.
Main Event Chaos & Finish
The closing sequence of the match was filled with outside interference and unexpected injuries:
- Saquon Shugars appeared to have the match won with a close nearfall, but Tristan Angels—who had argued with Shugars earlier in the broadcast—pulled the referee out of the ring to break up the count.
- An infuriated Shugars neutralized Angels on the outside with a high-flying dive.
- Capitalizing on the distraction, Tony D’Angelo set up Rook for Dead to Rights, but D’Angelo’s back suddenly gave out mid-move.
- Rook immediately seized the opportunity, scaling the turnbuckle and hitting a splash off the top rope to secure the pinfall victory.
Following the bell, NXT Champion Grayson Waller marched down to the ring to confront the newly crowned number one contender. The broadcast signed off with the two men locked in an intense staredown, laying the groundwork for their upcoming title clash.
