Rey Mysterio has spent nearly four decades in the ring, and even at 51, he remains one of WWE’s most active and recognizable stars. But during a recent appearance on What’s Your Story? with Stephanie McMahon, the WWE Hall of Famer admitted that retirement has started to creep into his thoughts — even if he doesn’t feel ready to make that call.
Mysterio said he has been asking himself whether the end might be approaching, but his body hasn’t given him the signal yet.
“Most recently, I have been battling with, is it getting close to my time to retire,” Mysterio said. “I certainly don’t feel like I am. Like, my body is saying, ‘Okay, now it’s time,’ and I always like to listen to my body.”
Enjoying His Role Outside the Ring
Mysterio has taken on new responsibilities in recent months, including his role as AAA’s General Manager. He said he enjoys working with rising talent and watching new stars develop, but that passion hasn’t replaced his love for performing.
“I am enjoying the position of being AAA GM and seeing young rising stars come up in the game,” he said. “But at the end of the day, it’s like, man, I really enjoy what I do on every level.”
He acknowledged that opportunities for veterans naturally become limited as younger talent steps into the spotlight, especially in lucha libre. Mysterio said he accepts that reality and understands when it’s time for others to move ahead.
A Wave of Retirements Around Him
Mysterio’s comments come during a period where several major names have stepped away from the ring. John Cena retired in late 2025, followed by Hiroshi Tanahashi and AJ Styles in early 2026. Brock Lesnar also ended his career after SummerSlam earlier this month.
Seeing peers retire hasn’t pushed Mysterio toward a decision, but it has made him reflect on how unpredictable that moment can be.
No Timeline, No Pressure
Mysterio said he isn’t interested in setting a date or announcing a farewell tour. If retirement comes, he expects it will happen naturally.
“I think as far as tapping out, never say never, but it can just pop up one day, just out of nowhere, and say, ‘Okay, now it’s time.’”
For now, Mysterio remains committed to performing, mentoring and enjoying every part of his career — until his body tells him otherwise.
