AEW Considering Matt Sydal Return After Two-Year Absence

AEW is reportedly discussing a potential in-ring return for Matt Sydal following a lengthy absence due to injury.

According to PWInsider, there have been internal talks within All Elite Wrestling about bringing Sydal back to active competition in the near future. The veteran performer has been away from AEW action for approximately two years as he recovered from a significant medical procedure.

Sydal underwent surgery in 2024 to address a long-standing issue with his right foot. The injury reportedly traced back to a motorcycle accident more than a decade earlier. The procedure was extensive, involving the breaking and re-fusing of several bones, along with the insertion of hardware to properly realign his toes and restore function.

Matt Sydal’s Road Back to the Ring

Despite the seriousness of the surgery, Sydal has already made steps toward returning to the ring. On July 19, 2025, he competed at an international wrestling event in France, facing Ultimo Dragon. That match marked his first in-ring appearance following the operation.

However, his last bout under the AEW banner came earlier, when he faced Konosuke Takeshita on the May 22, 2024 episode of Dynamite.

Sydal originally debuted in AEW at the 2020 All Out pay-per-view, appearing as a surprise entrant in the Casino Battle Royal. Over time, he became a consistent presence on the roster, known for his high-flying style and technical ability.

While no official timeline has been confirmed for his return to AEW programming, the reported internal discussions suggest that the company is at least exploring the possibility of reintroducing Sydal into the fold. His experience and unique in-ring approach could add depth to AEW’s roster if and when he is cleared for full-time competition.
