GUNTHER Explains His Role as WWE’s Modern “Career Killer” – Over the past year, GUNTHER has built a reputation as one of the most dominant and unforgiving figures in modern professional wrestling. His recent run has seen him defeat several of the industry’s most established names in what were presented as their final matches. That list includes John Cena, Goldberg, and most recently AJ Styles, whom GUNTHER defeated at the WWE Royal Rumble by rendering him unconscious with a sleeper hold. As that reputation continues to grow, GUNTHER believes his actions serve a larger purpose within the business.
In a new interview on the Rumble Recap podcast, GUNTHER was asked about the reactions he receives from fans following these high-profile victories. Rather than expressing concern over negative crowd responses or uncomfortable silence, he framed his role as a necessary step in the evolution of professional wrestling. According to GUNTHER, his dominance forces hard truths that others avoid confronting.
“But the question is, like, what do you get out of it? What does everybody else get out of it?” GUNTHER said. “I’m doing a good service to the sport, to the business of professional wrestling, because there’s all those guys, they always think they’re welcome, they chase another moment, and nobody takes the time and invests their energy in stepping up to them and make them understand, ‘hey, get out of here.’ You’ve done your thing. It’s time to move on and take moments away from people far greater like myself. So that’s what it is. Simple as that.”
The former World Heavyweight Champion also addressed the idea that his legacy is defined by the legendary names he has defeated. While acknowledging that he has been the final opponent for wrestlers such as Goldberg, Cena, and Styles, GUNTHER rejected the notion that his career depends on those moments. Instead, he emphasized consistency, performance, and results as the true measure of his success.
“You can blame me for what it is, but my career is not built on what fans think about me,” GUNTHER continued. “My career is not built on Goldberg, John Cena, AJ Styles. My career is built on the results I deliver, the performances I deliver. That’s what it’s built on.”
With his Royal Rumble victory over Styles adding another name to the list, GUNTHER has fully embraced the identity of a wrestler who closes chapters rather than revisits them, positioning himself as a defining force of the current era.
