Eric Bischoff Blasts WON Awards After AEW‑Heavy Results – The results of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter awards were released earlier this week, drawing attention for heavily favoring AEW while WWE was largely recognized in negative categories. The outcome led to renewed debate about how the awards are voted on and how representative they are of the wider wrestling audience.
During a recent episode of his podcast, WWE Hall of Famer Eric Bischoff commented on the results and questioned the credibility of the voting base. He also addressed the influence of longtime wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer and the publication’s readership.
“Can you imagine what that group of Observer voters in a room would be like? Can you imagine hanging out there for an hour or two?
I mean, you’ve got Dave as the head gooner that they all look up to and view the world of wrestling through the Dave Meltzer lens. Of course you’re going to get these kinds of responses.
These are the most culturally isolated, irrelevant group of people you could ever imagine. So I don’t know why anybody would expect any of these categories to reflect anything sensible.”
Bischoff’s comments reflect ongoing criticism from some industry figures who believe the awards do not represent the broader fan base. The awards are determined by only a few hundred voters — a tiny sample size compared to the global wrestling audience. While the awards generate discussion every year, their actual industry impact remains minimal.
Despite the criticism, the awards continue to generate discussion each year due to their long history and the attention they receive within wrestling media circles. Supporters view them as a reflection of a dedicated segment of fans, while detractors see them as a narrow sample that does not fully capture the wider wrestling audience.
