Randy Orton Snaps on SmackDown With Brutal Attack on Matt Cardona

The March 20 episode of WWE SmackDown from the Lenovo Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, ended with Randy Orton completely losing control, unleashing a violent and unprovoked assault on Matt Cardona that left the locker room — and the audience — stunned.

Earlier in the show, Orton seated in the middle of the ring, speaking candidly about his relationship with the WWE Universe. He said fans have cheered his music for years, and he tried to return that love, but something inside him shifted. The empty smile faded, and the Apex Predator resurfaced.

He spoke about legacy — specifically, the championships he wants attached to his name. Orton admitted he believed he could beat Drew McIntyre for the WWE Title, but Cody Rhodes winning the championship changed the equation. He wasn’t sure he could defeat Rhodes… until Cody told him he wanted the “best version” of Randy Orton at WrestleMania. That meant embracing the voices in his head again.

Orton said he needs that killer instinct to claim his 15th world title. Quoting his own theme song, he declared that the voices are telling him he will beat Cody Rhodes for the WWE Championship in the main event of WrestleMania.

After finishing his promo, Orton walked backstage. Wrestlers quickly stepped aside, signaling the tension surrounding his mindset. That’s when Matt Cardona approached him, calmly trying to reason with him. Cardona referenced their long history and his connection to Cody Rhodes, hoping to ground Orton before things spiraled further.

Instead, Orton snapped.

He mocked Cardona, dismissed him, and then — without warning — punched him in the face, sending a clear message to anyone thinking about getting involved in his business. Orton warned Cardona to stay out of his affairs before walking off.

Later in the night, Orton returned to the ring and called Cardona out again. He apologized… then immediately dropped him with an RKO.

What followed was the most violent moment of the night. Orton dragged Cardona out of the ring as security swarmed. They briefly pulled Orton away, but he broke free, grabbed Cardona, and threw him back into the ring. Orton placed Cardona’s arm inside a steel chair. Officials pleaded with him to stop.

He paused — then stomped on the chair, appearing to injure Cardona’s arm as the crowd reacted in shock.

Randy Orton didn’t just send a message on SmackDown. He made it clear that the Apex Predator is back — and no one, not even old friends, is safe.
