A major title change took place on the March 27 episode of WWE SmackDown, as Sami Zayn defeated Carmelo Hayes to capture the United States Title for the second time in his career, heading to WrestleMania 42 in the process.
The match was set up earlier in the night during a backstage segment involving Zayn and SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis. Zayn walked in as Aldis was informing Trick Williams that he had secured a spot on the WrestleMania 42 card. When Zayn asked about his own status, he was surprised to learn that no plans had been made for him.
Clearly frustrated, Zayn began to walk away before overhearing Williams mock him and suggest he should head to catering. Zayn responded by attacking Williams on the spot. After the altercation, Zayn told Aldis he would find his own path to WrestleMania 42, which led him to accept Carmelo Hayes’ open challenge for the United States Championship later in the show.
The title match itself included outside involvement that played a key role in the outcome. Trick Williams made his way to ringside during the bout, still upset over the earlier confrontation. At one point, Williams grabbed the United States Championship and handed it to Zayn, which distracted the referee.
While the official’s attention was diverted, Williams struck Hayes, leaving him vulnerable. Zayn, unaware of the interference, capitalized on the moment and delivered a Helluva Kick to secure the victory and win the title.
Following the match, Zayn once again approached Nick Aldis backstage. He asked if his title win changed anything regarding WrestleMania 42. Aldis confirmed that Zayn would now be part of the event and announced that Zayn will defend the United States Championship against Trick Williams at WrestleMania 42 next month.
The result not only gives Zayn championship gold heading into the biggest show of the year, but also sets up a high-profile title match as WWE SmackDown continues its build toward WrestleMania 42.
