Cody Rhodes is reportedly set to play a major role in the Undisputed WWE Title match at WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas. According to the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Rhodes is viewed internally as a “virtual lock” to challenge current champion Drew McIntyre at the event.
While Rhodes’ involvement appears firm, the structure of the match is still under discussion. WWE officials are debating whether the bout should remain a traditional singles contest or shift to a Triple Threat format. There is concern behind the scenes that another one-on-one match between Rhodes and McIntyre could feel predictable, especially after their recent rivalry. In January, McIntyre defeated Rhodes in Berlin to capture the championship, adding more history to their ongoing feud.
One option under consideration is the addition of Jacob Fatu to create a three-way match. Dave Meltzer reported that, at this time, discussions have centered on Rhodes being included, with Fatu as the only possible addition if the match expands beyond two competitors. Meltzer also noted that a match involving more than three wrestlers is not currently being discussed. Names such as Randy Orton and Sami Zayn have been mentioned in speculation, but there is no confirmation that either will be added.
Despite being eliminated from the Royal Rumble by Roman Reigns, Fatu has gained strong support within the creative team. Some within WWE see him as a fresh element who could change the dynamic of the title match at Allegiant Stadium.
The situation has reportedly created pressure within WWE headquarters in Stamford. WrestleVotes indicated that production and marketing teams are working against deadlines for WrestleMania materials, and the absence of a finalized main event for the Undisputed WWE Title has slowed planning.
This weekend’s Elimination Chamber in Chicago could influence the decision. Rhodes is scheduled to compete in the Chamber for a guaranteed title opportunity. Fatu is not part of that match, which means creative would need a separate storyline path to include him if they move toward a Triple Threat.
WrestleMania 42 is also set to feature CM Punk vs. Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Title and Liv Morgan vs. Stephanie Vaquer. The final format of the Undisputed WWE Title match may become clearer after the Chamber event concludes.
