Swerve Strickland Turns Heel, Leaves Kenny Omega Laid Out – Swerve Strickland scored a major win over Kenny Omega in their first-ever meeting during the main event of AEW Dynamite on February 18. The result may also signal a shift in Strickland’s character direction after the match ended with a brutal post-match assault.
Following the victory, Strickland continued attacking Omega, using a chain and later delivering a vertebreaker through the announcers’ table. The segment appeared designed to write Omega off television for the time being and further elevate Strickland heading into the next major event.
Omega is not expected to compete at AEW Revolution on March 15. While an appearance is still possible, an in-ring match is not currently planned. The angle involving Strickland was reportedly put together with that timeline in mind.
Omega’s schedule also played a role in the situation. He had already been set to travel to Japan during the week of Revolution to take part in Capcom Cup 12. At the time, there had been uncertainty about whether he would be available to wrestle on the pay-per-view, and the storyline injury now aligns with that commitment.
The Dynamite main event marked the first singles clash between Strickland and Omega, making the result and the follow-up attack even more significant. The segment positioned Strickland as a central figure moving forward while simultaneously creating a storyline reason for Omega’s absence from in-ring competition.
With Revolution approaching, AEW now moves toward the pay-per-view without one of its most prominent performers scheduled to wrestle. Whether Omega appears in a non-wrestling capacity remains to be seen, but the outcome of Dynamite has clearly shaped the direction heading into the event and reinforced Strickland’s momentum.
