Cody Rhodes Addresses Mixed Crowd Reactions Ahead of Elimination Chamber

Cody Rhodes says he has started to notice a shift in how some WWE audiences respond to him.

Speaking on Unsportsmanlike, Rhodes explained that delivering promos remains his favorite part of the job. He views it as the strongest way to connect with fans. Rhodes also said he appreciates that his current WWE character reflects who he really is, allowing him to speak honestly instead of playing a role.

At the same time, he acknowledged that reactions have not always been fully positive in recent months.

“I’m in a funky spot as a wrestler on the show now, where not every game is a home game anymore,” Rhodes said. “Started getting some, ‘Let’s go Cody, Cody sucks.’ Started just getting some ‘Cody sucks’ places. No [he’s not hinting at a heel turn]. I’m just telling you from a crowd perspective, there’s some games — we did one when I was in Germany not too long ago. Bobby Roode walked up to me backstage, he goes, ‘They just showed you on the screen, it’s going to be an away game.’ I thought, ‘All right.’ The energy is all that matters, so it’s not a thing. But there are places like Florida, and there’s places like Texas, that you still, it’s like, ‘Ahh, I still feel good.’ You know? Like, we’re cool. We’re cool still.”

Rhodes made clear he is not teasing a heel turn. Instead, he stressed that crowd energy is what matters most, whether cheers or boos. He added that consistency is key. From city to city, he plans to remain the same character and not overreact to one night’s response. A negative reaction in one market could shift the next time WWE returns.

This Saturday, WWE Elimination Chamber takes place at the United Center in Chicago. Rhodes will compete in the men’s Elimination Chamber match alongside Randy Orton, Je’Von Evans, Trick Williams, LA Knight, and Jey Uso. The winner will earn a WrestleMania 42 championship opportunity against WWE Champion Drew McIntyre.
