CM Punk Criticizes WWE Creative Tropes – CM Punk is set to defend the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against Finn Bálor this Saturday, but his focus is not limited to the upcoming title match. Days before stepping into the ring, Punk openly questioned several creative patterns he believes have become overused in WWE programming.
Speaking on Morning Moshpit on February 27, 2026, the Chicago native addressed what he described as repetitive storytelling devices. One of his main frustrations centers on the familiar angle where two rivals are forced to team up ahead of a major showdown. With his WrestleMania 42 main event against Roman Reigns already confirmed, Punk made it clear he has no interest in participating in that formula.
“The wrestling trope. How about the can the guys that are wrestling form a tag team and get along (on) the road to WrestleMania,” Punk said. “I’m not trying to tag with Roman over the next eight weeks. Oh, can they? Can they coexist? Man, shut up. The answer is no, and I’ll see you in Las Vegas.”
Punk also turned his attention to the structure of the Elimination Chamber Premium Live Event. Traditionally, the show often opens and closes with Elimination Chamber matches. Punk suggested that format limits flexibility for other high-profile bouts on the card.
“I feel like, here’s another trope. We start the show with an Elimination Chamber. We end the show with Elimination Chamber. Let’s get rid of that too,” Punk added. “I think either myself and Finn or Becky and AJ could benefit from possibly going first.”
The latter comment references the scheduled Women’s Intercontinental Championship match between Becky Lynch and AJ Lee, another marquee contest set for the United Center event.
While Punk remains focused on retaining his title against Bálor, his remarks signal that he is equally invested in challenging WWE’s creative direction as he builds toward WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas.
