Marc Mero Reveals Small WWE Royalty Payment – Marc Mero has shared insight into what WWE royalties can look like years after leaving the company, and his example highlights how limited those payments can be even during one of wrestling’s most profitable periods.
Mero worked for WWE from 1996 through 1999, a stretch that aligned with the height of the Attitude Era. During that time, business surged to unprecedented levels, and Mero regularly appeared on television alongside some of the biggest names in company history, including “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, The Rock, and Triple H. His run placed him directly in the middle of WWE’s most commercially successful boom.
In the decades since, WWE has heavily relied on Attitude Era footage for documentaries, compilation shows, and retrospective projects. Mero has appeared in several of these releases through archived matches and video packages highlighting that era. While the content continues to generate revenue for WWE, Mero revealed that the financial return for him personally was minimal.
On social media, Mero shared images of an old WWE royalty statement he came across in 2019. According to the statement, Mero received a royalty payment of just $71.47 for his appearances in WWE video content, despite that material being tied to significant revenue generation.
Alongside the images, Mero explained why he decided to make the information public. He noted that fans frequently ask wrestlers how much they earn from WWE royalties long after leaving the company. His post was intended to offer a real example rather than speculation.
“I’ve been asked many times what wrestlers actually make in royalties from the WWE, so let me give you a real example.
I left the WWE years ago, and more than 20 years later, in 2019, I came across an old royalty statement. When you look at how much money many wrestlers help generate versus how little they’re actually paid, it’s honestly hard to believe.
On this statement, even after being out of wrestling for over two decades, I was still partly responsible for $39,590.81 in revenue.
My royalty payment for that?
$71.47.
That’s the reality for a lot of wrestlers. We helped build the brand, the characters, and the moments fans still watch today, yet the compensation rarely reflects the value that was created.”
Mero’s comments add to a long-running discussion about how former talent is compensated for archival content, especially those who were part of WWE’s most profitable eras but no longer have active contracts.
