WWE Considering Gunther vs. Brock Lesnar for WrestleMania 42 – A long-rumored dream match may finally be back on WWE’s internal radar, as new details suggest Brock Lesnar’s return plans could directly lead to a major WrestleMania 42 showdown.

According to Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Brock Lesnar is expected to appear at the 2026 WWE Royal Rumble PLE, alongside Roman Reigns. Meltzer further reported that WWE may once again be positioning itself to move forward with the long-discussed Brock Lesnar vs. GUNTHER match on the WrestleMania stage.

The idea of Lesnar facing GUNTHER at WrestleMania is not new. WWE has reportedly attempted to book the match on two previous occasions, but both plans were scrapped before they could materialize. Meltzer noted that the first attempt was abandoned due to internal concerns that GUNTHER had not yet fully reached his ceiling as a top-level main event star. Although Lesnar and GUNTHER shared a highly memorable staredown during the 2023 Royal Rumble, creative ultimately opted not to revisit the encounter heading into WrestleMania that year.

A second attempt at booking the match later fell apart when Lesnar became entangled in the Janel Grant lawsuit, prompting WWE to distance itself from using him in a high-profile program. As a result, any immediate plans involving Lesnar at the top of the card were shelved.

The situation now appears to be significantly different. Meltzer reported that GUNTHER is currently operating at the peak of his momentum. That rise was underscored by his recent victory over John Cena, where he forced Cena to submit in what was billed as Cena’s retirement match at Saturday Night’s Main Event last month. GUNTHER has also publicly stated in the past that facing Lesnar is a match he wants.

With both Lesnar and GUNTHER expected to be part of the 2026 Men’s Royal Rumble Match later this month, WWE has a clear opportunity to reignite the rivalry on-screen. One confrontation could be enough to set the direction for WrestleMania 42, which is scheduled to take place in Las Vegas this April.

Lesnar last appeared in WWE at SummerSlam 2025 after TKO approved his return. He later defeated John Cena at WrestlePalooza in September, marking his first in-ring match since coming back to the company.
