Matthews has been sidelined since AEW Grand Slam Australia on February 15, where he suffered the injury during his ring entrance. Despite the damage, Matthews pushed through and completed a 13-minute match against Kazuchika Okada. It was later revealed that he wrestled through ligament damage and nerve-related issues, a decision that underscored his toughness but also complicated the recovery process.
In June, Matthews disclosed that the injury was not healing as expected. As weeks passed without significant improvement, he confirmed that surgery would be necessary. While the procedure addressed some of the structural damage, Matthews has continued to deal with lingering nerve-related symptoms. Last month, he noted that numbness remained an issue, though he expressed hope that it would gradually fade with time.
That concern was reiterated in a recent Instagram Stories post, where Matthews acknowledged the slow pace of his rehabilitation and the mental adjustment that comes with it.
“It’s been a long process! Still having nerve issues with a lot of numbness! But accepted that it’s gonna take time. Really thought I’d have returned to the ring by now but can only control what I can.”
The update suggests that while progress is being made, Matthews’ recovery is far from complete. Nerve injuries are often unpredictable, and symptoms such as numbness can take months to fully resolve, even after surgery. Matthews’ acceptance of the timeline indicates a cautious approach, likely aimed at avoiding setbacks once he is cleared to return.
