Buddy Matthews Expresses Frustration Over Slow Recovery – AEW star Buddy Matthews has shared a candid update on his recovery from an ankle injury sustained earlier this year, revealing that the rehabilitation process has been more difficult and slower than initially expected. Matthews has not competed since February, when he suffered the injury during his entrance at the AEW Grand Slam: Australia event.
Despite the setback occurring before the bell even rang, Matthews went on to wrestle his scheduled match against Kazuchika Okada in front of his home country audience. Though he managed to avoid a fracture, the damage to his ankle included torn ligaments and cartilage — injuries that have proven more stubborn than anticipated. Originally aiming for a return by April, Matthews now finds himself in a longer-than-expected recovery period.
Speaking during a recent Instagram Live session, Matthews explained his frustration:
“The ankle is not recovering as well as I thought it would be. There’s no mobility to it. If I can’t have mobility, I can’t move properly. Once it hits three months without healing, it becomes chronic. I thought I’d be back in the ring in April.”
The timing of the injury was particularly unfortunate. Matthews, along with Brody King and Julia Hart, had been attempting to refocus the House of Black stable following the departure of Malakai Black from AEW. With the faction in transition, Matthews’ extended absence has further stalled their momentum.
As of now, no timetable has been announced for Matthews’ return to AEW programming. Fans and colleagues alike will be watching closely, hoping for positive developments in his recovery.
