GUNTHER Expected to Return to WWE Programming Soon – Former two-time World Heavyweight Champion GUNTHER is reportedly close to making his return to WWE television. According to Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, “Gunther is expected back very soon.”
GUNTHER has been out of action since early August after WWE announced he would be sidelined indefinitely due to multiple injuries sustained following his World Heavyweight Championship loss at SummerSlam. His absence marked the end of what had been a strong summer run.
On June 9, GUNTHER captured his second World Heavyweight Championship on RAW, forcing Jey Uso to submit. He went on to defend the title at Saturday Night’s Main Event XL on July 12, where he defeated Goldberg in what was promoted as Goldberg’s retirement match. His reign lasted 54 days before CM Punk defeated him at SummerSlam on August 2. Two nights later, WWE officially wrote him off television with the injury announcement.
This run followed his first World Heavyweight Championship reign, which began at SummerSlam 2024 when he defeated Seth Rollins. That reign lasted 273 days, with successful defenses against top names such as Sami Zayn, Jey Uso, and Damian Priest, before Rollins reclaimed the title at WrestleMania 41.
Even before his world title accolades, GUNTHER made history as the longest-reigning WWE Intercontinental Champion. He held the title for 666 days, surpassing The Honky Tonk Man’s long-standing record and cementing his legacy with battles against Sheamus, Drew McIntyre, and Chad Gable.
With Meltzer noting that his comeback is imminent, fans may not have to wait much longer to see “The Ring General” back in action.
