Backstage Update on Shayna Baszler Following NXT Homecoming Appearance – Shayna Baszler made headlines with her unexpected appearance at the NXT Homecoming special this past Tuesday, but the former champion has not re-signed with WWE. Baszler, who was released from her WWE contract in May, appeared in a backstage segment where she offered guidance to Sol Ruca and Zaria.
According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Baszler’s cameo was a one-time occurrence, and no new agreement has been reached. While WWE does have interest in bringing her back, the focus would be in a behind-the-scenes capacity rather than in the ring. “Regarding Baszler those in the company said that they expect and hope she take a coaching or producing position,” Meltzer reported. “At this point nothing is in place and it was just a one-off thing this week.”
Baszler already has some experience in that role, as she reportedly worked with NXT as a producer between her release and the conclusion of her 90-day non-compete clause. Still, she is not shutting the door on her in-ring career. Her first post-WWE match is scheduled for October 5 at a Prestige Wrestling event in Portland, Oregon, where she will face Masha Slamovich.
Baszler also recently expressed openness to working outside of WWE. Speaking with Ariel Helwani in August, she said: “I don’t care as much of the letters behind it, I just want to practice my craft. And if I can do that alongside my friends, that’s always a great place to be. So, I’m not going to say a hard no to any of that.”
Before her wrestling career, Baszler was a trailblazer in women’s MMA, competing in Strikeforce and the UFC. She later transitioned to WWE, becoming a two-time NXT Women’s Champion with a combined 548 days as champion, the longest reign in the title’s history. On the main roster, she added two WWE Women’s Tag Team Title reigns to her accomplishments.
