Cody Rhodes Dismisses Moves Vs Storytelling Debate: “We Are Broadway with Body Slams” – Cody Rhodes has weighed in on a long-running debate among wrestling fans — whether in-ring “moves” or “storytelling” are more important — and made it clear that he believes the argument itself misses the point entirely.
During the latest episode of What Do You Wanna Talk About?, Rhodes addressed the issue while speaking about the advice he often gives to younger talent. He emphasized that both physical execution and narrative are essential parts of a complete wrestling performance.
“It’s funny you say that about be you and know your character. Because today there is this online argument about moves, yeah, versus storytelling. And it’s shocking to me that it’s an argument,” Rhodes said. “Yes, because the truth is, work like you said, work on your craft, right? Get it down. Yeah, you can’t be a slouch, no, but this is also bringing them together.”
Rhodes urged people to stop treating the two concepts as if they are mutually exclusive.
“I don’t know why we’re arguing. Read them both, guys, both. Like, I don’t know what we’re arguing about. Great storage, awesome, yeah, I need that cool move to bring them together, yes, and then it’s a whole nother thing. Then there’s a connection to the audience…”
He went on to explain that pro wrestling thrives because it combines both athleticism and narrative-driven entertainment.
“It’s a piece, and there’s everything today is so like, we got to make a stand, no, like it’s in the middle… We are a Broadway with body slams. We go and tell a story on that mat with moves. We are sports entertainment. We are not just sports, and we’re not just entertainment. We are both, and we need both, and that’s what makes us so badass and cool.”
Rhodes continues to serve as one of WWE’s top stars and locker room leaders, both in and out of the ring, and this message underscores the balanced philosophy he brings to professional wrestling.
