Backstage News on WWE Acquisition of Lucha Libre AAA

Backstage News on WWE Acquisition of Lucha Libre AAA – WWE officially announced the acquisition of Lucha Libre AAA during WrestleMania 41 Saturday, solidifying rumors that had been circulating for weeks. The announcement came just hours after WrestleVotes initially reported the deal and was accompanied by the reveal of Worlds Collide, a joint event between NXT and AAA, scheduled for June 7th.

According to a report from Fightful Select, talent familiar with the situation revealed that conversations regarding AAA’s future and potential partnerships had been underway for several years. Once the WWE–TKO merger was finalized, the likelihood of WWE partnering with AAA reportedly increased significantly. One source stated, “Once the WWE-TKO merger happened, there was a lot of discussion about that partnership being with WWE. There had been conversations between the two sides for quite some time.”

While the finalization of the acquisition was kept under tight wraps, sources believe WWE closed the deal shortly after AEW and CMLL announced their upcoming Arena Mexico collaboration. The timing has led to speculation that WWE’s move may have been, at least in part, a strategic response to AEW’s growing presence in Mexico through CMLL.

Despite the announcement, there remains internal doubt among some AAA talent regarding the nature of the acquisition. The concern largely stems from skepticism that the Roldan family, who have long held control of AAA, would fully hand over ownership. At this time, WWE has yet to release specific details on the structure of the acquisition, including whether AAA will operate independently or under WWE’s direct management.

Triple H briefly addressed the acquisition during the WrestleMania 41 press conference, calling it “an exciting time for the company” and an opportunity to preserve and expand the cultural legacy of lucha libre. He emphasized WWE’s intent to grow the AAA brand and its presence throughout Mexico, South America, and Central America, while maintaining the traditional elements of lucha libre style.

The full extent of the acquisition’s impact is expected to become clearer in the coming weeks as WWE prepares for the June 7th Worlds Collide event and potentially integrates AAA talent into the NXT ecosystem.
