WWE Smackdown Results – April 23, 2021 – Tonight’s show begins with a look back at last week’s episode when Cesaro decided to show that he was next for Roman Reigns and the events leading to Seth Rollins attacking Cesaro in the main event.
We’re live from the WWE ThunderDome at Yuengling Center in Tampa, Florida, as we see Cesaro in the middle of the ring ready to speak. But before he can say anything, Seth Rollins appears on the stage.
Seth Rollins calls Cesaro the man of the hour. He wants everyone to give it up for him. Seth says he came out here to congratulate him because he did it. You reached and fulfilled your potential. Do you know why? You were in the ring at Wrestlemania with me. Seth says he took Cesaro from way down there to the promised land with your performance at Wrestlemania. Where is my thanks and adulation? You said that you are moving on from me and have your sights set on the Universal Championship. I said it last week and I will say it again. It isn’t over until I say it’s over. On my worst day and your best, you can’t beat me.
Cesaro asks Seth if he is having a good day because he is having a great day. He wants Seth to enter the ring so he can beat him tonight. Seth says maybe he will use tonight as an opportunity to teach a lesson.
Jey Uso’s music plays and he comes out and he says that Seth has a point. You challenged the head of the table and you don’t deserve to be in the same ring as him. You can’t beat me, Roman, or Seth. You didn’t get the lesson last week and I will show you tonight. Seth tells Jey Cesaro has the high ground now, but they need to surround Cesaro. They stand on opposite sides of the ring and…
Daniel Bryan’s music plays and he yeses his way to the ringside area and he gets in the ring wtih Cesaro.
Daniel asks where are they going. You didn’t get what you want. Cesaro wants a title match against Roman. Seth, you are embarrassed and upset that Cesaro beat you at Wrestlemania. Jey, you came out here because Roman told you to. Daniel says he came out here so Cesaro finally gets what he deserves. There is a reason why I haven’t done this for you Seth or Jey. I have an infinite amount of respect for Cesaro becaues he has worked harder than anybody. The only reason Roman is where he is today is because of family connections while Cesaro hasn’t gotten one thing given to him.
Daniel suggests that they come fight him and Cesaro because of what he said to them? Probably not. Will Roman come out and accept the challenge? Probably not. He doesn’t like to fight. Roman is going to come out and the three of you are going to try to attack us and beat us to a pulp. If three guys are going to attack us, there is no one I would rather have at my side than Cesaro.
And here comes Roman Reigns accompanied by Paul Heyman.
Paul hands Roman a mic and Roman says DB is talking about hard work. You should be talking about the work I did on you at Wrestlemania. I told you and everyone what would happen. Roman shows his shirt that shows him pinning Edge and Bryan. He says Bryan is on the bottom and that means he is a loser. The fact that this loser is talking for you, that makes you a loser. You are not a loser to everyone, but you are losers to me. You are top tier losers. Bryan, you are a Wrestlemania main event loser. Cesaro, you are a casino loser, a loser with bad luck. Y’all are here running your mouth and talking smack while people are ready to whoop your ass. Reigns wishes good luck and walks off as his music starts back up. Rollins and Uso look to be heading to the ring as we go to commercial.
Cesaro and Daniel Bryan vs. Jey Uso and Seth Rollins
All four men fight in the ring with Jey and Bryan squaring off and Rollins and Cesaro on the other side of the ring.
The referee starts the match and Bryan with a butterfly suplex to Jey for a near fall. Bryan with a wrist lock and Cesaro tags in and they slam Jey. Cesaro wtih an elbow drop for a near fall. Cesaro knocks Rollins off the apron and then Cesaro with a delayed vertical suplex. Cesro gets a near fall. Seth tags in and Cesaro wtih European uppercuts and forearms. Cesaro wtih an Irish whip and Cesaro misses a shoulder. Rollins with slingblade for a near fall. Rollins with a knee drop and punches.
Rollins sends Cesaro into the turnbuckles and Jey tags in and he punches Cesaro. Jey with a running hip into the corner. Jey with a crossface and kick to Cesaro. Cesaro with a punch but Jey with punches. Rollins tags in and he hits a knee drop. Seth with a reverse chin lock. Rollins comes off the turnbuckles and Cesaro catches Rollins and hits a back breaker. Bryan tags in and hits a missle drop kick and then he drop kicks Jey off the apron. Bryan with kicks to Rollins but he misses a round kick and Rollins goes for an enzuigiri but Bryan grabs the leg and Bryan with a German suplex for a near fall.
Jey and Seth attack Cesaro and they hit a double suplex on the floor as we go to commercial.
We are back and Rollins with a forearm to Bryan in the ropes. Rollins with a running boot to the side of the head. Rollins gets a near fall. Rollins works on the neck and he connects with a forearm to the back of the head for a near fall. Rollins gets another near fall. Jey tags in and he hits a thrust kick to the back while Rollins holds him. Jey with a boot to the midsection. Jey with a punch and Bryan falls into his opponent’s corner and Rollins has some words for Bryan.
Jey chokes Bryan in the corner. Rollins rakes the eyes while the referee deals with Uso. Bryan with punches and he punches Rollins off the apron. Jey with a Samoan drop for a near fall. Seth tags in while Cesaro tries to get the screens to cheer for Bryan. Rollins sends Bryan into the turnbuckles and he chokes Bryan in the corner. Rollins yells at Bryan and Bryan with a flip out of the corner on an Irish whip and Bryan and Seth both go for cross body presses at the same time and both go down. Jey and Cesaro tag in and Cesaro with European uppercuts and punches to Jey.
Cesaro with a discus clothesline for a near fall. Cesrao with a double leg take down and he goes for the Giant Swing but Jey escapes. Jey catches Cesaro with an enzuigiri but Cesaro with a springboard European uppercut for a near fall. Jey avoids a Gotch Style Neutralizer but Cesaro with a pop up uppercut for a near fall. Rollins kicks Bryan and Bryan sends Rollins over the top rope to the floor. Bryan with a suicide dive onto Rollins. Jey sends Cesaro to the floor and Cesaro with a European uppercut to stop a suicide dive. Cesaro comes off the turnbuckles with a super kick.
We go to commercial.
We are back and Cesaro blocks a neck breaker and goes for a Giant Swing. Rollins with a rollup for a near fall. Cesaro with a sharpshooter and Uso with a super kick to the back of the head. Jey tags in and Cesaro stops Uso on the turnbuckles while Rollins limps up the ramp. He says he doesn’t need this. Cesaro with a superplex to Jey and Bryan tags in and he hits a flying knee on Jey for the three count.
Winners: Daniel Bryan and Cesaro
After the match, Bryan gets on the mic and he calls out Roman Reigns. Daniel says he thought he heard something about someone coming out to get them or whoop their asses.
Csearo sees Jey Uso trying to attack Bryan from behind and Cesaro with a double leg take down and Cesaro gives Uso the giant swing.. Bryan asks if this is what Roman was talking about.Cesaro with a European uppercut to Jey.
Bryan says he doesn’t know if Roman is going to accept Cesaro’s challenge. Cesaro says they are waiting for him. Cesaro says Roman won’t even help his own cousin and that shows what type of man he is. Bryan tells Cesaro to swing Jey again to show what kind of family man Roman is. Cesaro swings Jey again while Bryan wants to know if Roman will come out to help his cousin.
Bryan asks if Roman is afraid. He knows that Roman couldn’t beat Kevin Owens without Jey’s help. You couldn’t beat me without Edge’s help. You couldn’t beat Edge without Jey’s help. You can’t beat Cesaro. You are afraid that if Cesaro faces him one on one for the Universal Championship, Cesaro will be the new Universal Champion.
Backstage:
Adam Pearce and Sonya Deville are talking in the office and Apollo Crews shows up and he is angry that he has to defend his title tonight. Crews refuses to face Big E tonight. Pearce says Big E will get his chance when he is ready against Apollo or his opponent tonight… Kevin Owens.
— Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler come out for Nia’s match and Nia signals to the back and Reginald comes out.
— We are back and Kayla asks Jey how he feels about his tag team partner leaving him. Jey says Cesaro will get put down for disrespecting the Table.
Nia Jax vs. Tamina
Nia runs Tamina into the corner and connects with shoulders. Nia with an Irish wihp and splash. Nia with a head butt. Nia monologues and Tamina with forearms and punches followed by a Thesz Press and punches. Tamina with more punches and Nia goes down. Shayna tries to pull Nia to the floor and Nia gets away from Tamina. Tamina kicks Nia to the floor. Tamina sends Nia into the ringside barrier. Shayna has some words for Tamina while Tamina slams Nia’s head into the ringside barrier. Reginald gets on the apron and Tamina is distracted. Tamina kicks Shayna in the back and Shayna is pissed at Reginald and Reginald falls over the ring steps.

Kayla Braxton is in the back with Kevin Owens. She brings up that he could be the new Intercontinental Champion tonight. Kevin says it has been a while since he has had an Intercontinental Championship match. He says a lot of people want to take that title from Crews and he will gladly take him off his royal perch.
Big E says that Kevin jumped the line and he calls him a habitual jumper. Big E says that this is his match and his title. Kevin says Big E is right that he should get a rematch. It isn’t tonight because he gets the match and it is next. Kevin says he will win the title and then it will be his title. Big E and Kevin laugh and then the laughing stops as we go to commercial.
— We are back and Adam Pearce is with Daniel Bryan and Daniel asks if Cesaro is getting his chance. Adam says he cannot snap his fingers and make it happen, but he will try. Bryan tells Adam to do more than try.
Kevin Owens vs. Apollo Crews for the Intercontinental Championship
They lock up and go into the corner and Owens with a clean break. Owens with a single leg take down and he works on the ankle and gets a near fall. Owens with a side head lock. Owens tells Crews not to pull his hair even though it is nice and soft. Crews gets back to his feet and Owens takes Crews back ot the mat. Crews with a rollup for a near fall. Owens with a side head lock. Owens with a shoulder tackle but Crews stays on his feet. Owens with a drop kick and chops. Owens with forearms and punches in the corner. Crews with a kick and side head lock.
Owens with a back elbow and back senton. Owens with a clothesline that sends Crews over the top rope to the floor. Owens sets for a dive to the floor but Azeez blocks Owens’ path. Crews trips Owens on the apron. Crews with a suplex for a near fall. Crews with kicks in the corner. Owens is sent to the floor by Crews. Owens tries to Irish whip Crews into the apron but Crews with a moonsault and he lands on his feet and Owens with a super kick. Owens with a swanton for a near fall.
Sami Zayn’s music plays and he dances his way down the ramp as we go to commercial.
We are back and Owens sets for a superplex but Crews with head butts to stop Owens. Owens with an elbow. Crews with punches and head butts to Owens to send him to the mat. Crews goes up top and he leaps over Owens and Crews walks into a super kick for a near fall. Owens with a chop and Crews with a hot shot to Owens followed by a clothesline for a near fall. Crews with a waist lock but Owens holds on to the ropes. Owens with an elbow. Crews with a kick and enzuigiri followed by a German suplex. Crews holds on and hits another German suplex. Crews with a third German suplex for a near fall.
Crews misses a splash into the corner and Owens with a German suplex followed by a cannonball. Owens with another cannonball to Crews for a near fall. Crews escapes a stunner and Crews with an arm drag. Owens with a super kick and he hits a pop up power bomb for a near fall. Owens goes up top and Crews rolls to the floro and Owens with a frog splash off the apron onto Crews. They return to the ring and Azeez gets on the apron and Crews with a rollup for the three count.
Winner: Apollo Crews
After the match, Owens gives Crews a stunner but Azeez with the Nigerian Nail to Owens. As Azeez and Crews leave, Sami Zayn enters the ring to dance over Owens’ body.
Backstage:
Kayla Braxton is in the back with Paul Heyman. Kayla asks Paul if Roman is going to accept Cesaro’s challenge. Paul says that Kayla is as probing as she is beautiful. Paul says he likes Cesaro. He respects and loves Cesaro in a professional way. He became a star using only one name. Paul says Cesaro is his favorite Cesaro. Paul says that customer satisfcation is the number one thing on the Island of Relevancy. Paul gives a spoiler. By the end of Smackdown, everyone will hear from their chief and he will answer the challenge.

Backstage:
We are back and Megan Morant is outside Apollo Crews’ locker room and he emerges. He is celebrating his victory and he says his royal ancestors are jumping for joy over his victory. Who knew that hope could be cracked just like a larynx. Let this stop anybody foolish enough to daydream about this… Big E attacks Apollo Crews from behind as officials and agents pull him away. Commander Azeez eventually emerges from the locker room to check on Crews.
Aleister Black vignette:
He says he wants you to know the truth. Chapter One, the Dragon. He says he attended many funerals as a child. Father would bring him to these celebrations of life and death. He could do this because he was too young to understand. Father became more cold and distant. He was not taught how to defeat the dragon, but to become the dragon. Father was right. You are the monsters and I am nothing like you and I will never help you. You reveal the true rotten nature of man. You turned your children into bigger monsters. What you do is vile. You should be scorched from the Earth for more fertile things.
Backstage:
Kayla Braxton is in the back with Robert Roode and Dolph Ziggler. Kayla congratulates them on their victory last week. She asks who wins between Alpha Academy and The Mysterios. Dolph says he is going with Alpha Academy and then Kayla asks who is next.
The Street Profits show up and say that Roode and Ziggler got many chances so they are next. Ziggler tells them to get to the back of the line.
Bayley shows up to separate them and she tells Kayla that she is the ultimate Role Model. She wants to talk about her opponent at Backlash, Bianca Belair. She saw how nervous Bianca was in the back when she started on the roster and she worked with Bianca and helped take the training wheels off. She never got a thank you. Bayley calls Bianca rude and spoiled. Bayley says she will get her spot back at the top of the women’s division.
Montez Ford shows up and he tells Bianca he hates to be that guy and tells Bianca about what Bayley was saying. Bianca says she will be right there.

Backstage:
We are back and Bianca tells Bayley she can say it to her face right now. Bayley says she wanted to congratualte Bianca on making history and it will be an honor to be Bianca’s first challenger. You showed the WWE that you are the EST. Bayley says the way you picked up Sasha over your head and carried her up the stairs. It will be an honor to wrestle you at Backlash.
Bayley walks away. Bianca says she did not expect that. Bayley comes back and she starts laughing because Bianca bought what she said.
Dominik & Rey Mysterio vs. Otis & Chad Gable
Chad and Dominik start things off and Otis wants to start and he hits a shoulder tackle and then slams Dominik. Otis misses a splash and Dominik with punches. Otis with a clothesline. Otis picks up Dominik and he hits a standing power slam. Otis goes to the turnbuckles but Rey pulls Dominik to the floor. Otis with a running double clothesline and Chad with a gutbuster from a fireman’s carry position to Rey. Otis and Dominik return to the ring as we go to commercial.
We are back and Gable gets a near fall. Dominik with a shoulder to Otis on the apron and Dominik with a rollup for a near fall. Gable with a Tiger Suplex for a near fall. Otis tags in and punches Dominik. Otis with a double sledge to Dominik. Otis with a slam and elbow drop. Otis with an Irish wihp and he hits a shoulder in the corner. Chad tags in and he connects with shoulders. Otis tags in and he hits a splash on Dominik. Chad tags in and he gets a near fall. Gable with an arm bar.
Gable with a belly-to-belly suplex and he holds on and hits a second one. Gable goes for a German suplex but Dominik lands on his feet and hot shots Gable. Rey tags in and Rey with punches. Rey with a kick and head scissors take down. Rey with Code Red for a near fall. Gable with an Irish whip and he misses a shoulder in the corner and Gable hits the ring post. Rey goes up top but Gable with a forearm and he gets Rey on his shoulders. Rey counters into a Frankensteiner and Rey gets a near fall. Dominik tags in and Dominik sends Chad to the apron and Rey goes through the legs to pull Gable to the floor. Dominik with a sliding sunset flip power bomb into the ringside barrier.
Chad is sent into the ropes and Otis is sent into the announce table by Dominik. Rey with a 619 and splash for the three count.

After the match, Cesaro makes his way to the ring with Daniel Bryan. They acknowledge each other as The Mysterios go to the back and Bryan and Cesaro go to the ring.
We go to commercial.
— We are back and we are told that Big E gets his rematch against Apollo Crews next week.
In the Arena:
Cesaro and Daniel are in the ring and Cesaro says he’s ready for an answer from WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns. Reigns isn’t coming out. Cesaro says they can come back there and get an answer from Reigns if they have to, it’s up to him. They wait and the music hits as Reigns makes his way out with Jey Uso and Paul Heyman.
Reigns enters the ring and raises the title in the air as fans boo. He raises it in Cesaro’s face as the boos get louder. A “you suck!” chant starts up. Reigns can’t believe Cesaro is going to challenge him. He says Cesaro doesn’t deserve it and hasn’t earned it. Reigns says this will always be his because Cesaro can’t get on his level. Reigns says the champ issues the challenges around here and he challenges… he looks over at Bryan and says the challenge goes to him.
Reigns doesn’t like Bryan, has never liked him and never will, but will give him one more opportunity. He tells Bryan he will get one more title opportunity next week on SmackDown. What do you have to say? Cesaro tells Bryan he has to take the title shot, you can do this, you have to. Reigns tells Cesaro to shut up as he steps to him. Reigns says when Bryan loses, he never wants to see Bryan again. He wants Bryan to disappear, vanish, never to be seen on SmackDown again. Do you understand me? Bryan steps to Reigns and accepts the challenge. Fans pop.
A “yes!” chant starts up as Reigns and Bryan face off. Reigns raises the title in his face and taunts him with it. Reigns says Bryan will never have this, it’ll always be his. He keeps the title in the air and makes his exit as the music hits, still taunting Bryan. Cole says Bryan will be banished from SmackDown forever if he loses next week. The match is confirmed for next Friday with Bryan’s career on the line, but for just SmackDown? Bryan and Cesaro look on from the ring as Reigns, Uso and Heyman march up the ramp. SmackDown goes off the air.
