Sami Zayn Says Audience Connection Matters More Than the Traditional "WWE Champion Look"

Newly crowned Undisputed WWE Champion Sami Zayn recently addressed ongoing discussions surrounding his physique, explaining why emotional connection with fans outweighs fitting the traditional mold of a main event champion.

Speaking on a recent episode of Busted Open, Zayn reflected on questions he frequently receives regarding his physical presentation in a business historically dominated by larger, heavily muscled athletes.

“Tools to Get People to Care”

Reflecting on past interviews about his appearance, Zayn noted that he wished he had framed his perspective more clearly when initially questioned about his look:

“They asked me something about, ‘You don’t look like a typical champion, and how do you navigate that?’ or something like that. And I wish I had given a better answer, but the way I wish I had answered it is kind of what I was saying earlier.”

For Zayn, a wrestler’s physique—much like their technical maneuver set—is simply an instrument to build an emotional bond with the crowd:

“You know, all these things that we talk about, moves or even looks, like looking like a champion, those are all just tools. The reason you get jacked is, like, it’s part of the appeal, but at the end of the day it’s just getting people to care. So how you do it, it doesn’t matter. Everybody has a different way to get there, but if you can get people to care, that’s the game.”

Reaching the Top on His Own Terms

Zayn pointed to his ongoing run at the top of the card and his past narrative work as proof that emotional investment supersedes cosmetic expectations:

“And I’m doing it at the highest level now as champion. And so if I can, I’ve gotten a lot of people to care about a lot of stories in my day, and that’s some of the stuff that I’m more proud of than some of the great matches I’ve had.”

Zayn recently defeated CM Punk during the special WWE SmackDown broadcast in Mexico City, capturing the Undisputed WWE Championship for the second time in his career.
