MJF’s latest nickname has already stirred plenty of conversation online, but the former AEW World Champion made it clear he wants no part of one particular version of it. Following his return on the August 12 episode of AEW Dynamite, MJF quickly addressed the growing chatter before it gained any more traction.
The discussion began after MJF debuted his new identity on television, calling himself the “One True Champion.” Fans immediately shortened it to “OTC,” a move that created instant backlash because “OTC” is already widely associated with Roman Reigns as the “Original Tribal Chief.” That overlap sparked confusion, debate and accusations of intentional provocation.
MJF shut that down immediately.
MJF Rejects ‘OTC’ Acronym and Denies Fake Merchandise
During Dynamite, MJF instructed Justin Roberts to introduce him as the “One True Champion” before defeating Nick Wayne and Mike Bailey in a Triple Threat Match to secure the No. 2 entry in the Casino Gauntlet at AEW All In London.
Soon after, fans began referring to him as “OTC” on social media. MJF responded directly on X, writing:
“Never acronym the one true champion.”
The acronym controversy escalated when a fan-created image of supposed “OTC” merchandise began circulating online. Because the design resembled Roman Reigns’ branding, some fans accused AEW of copying WWE. The image spread quickly, adding fuel to the debate.
MJF dismissed the claims with a blunt response:
“Literally fake. Fk off.”
The rumor ended there.
Comparisons to CM Punk’s 2023 Storyline
The online discussion also revived comparisons between MJF’s “One True Champion” angle and CM Punk’s “Real World Championship” storyline from 2023. While fans continue to debate the similarities, MJF has shown he is fully committed to his current direction and isn’t hesitating to defend it publicly.
MJF will compete next in the Casino Gauntlet at AEW All In London later this month, with the winner earning a future AEW World Championship match. Until then, his stance remains clear: he is the “One True Champion,” and he does not want the nickname shortened — especially not to an acronym already tied to Roman Reigns.
