Kevin Owens used part of his SummerSlam post‑show interview to shine a light on something far more important than his own return. After stepping back into WWE in one of the loudest moments of the night, Owens paused to acknowledge Tanea Brooks — known to wrestling fans as Rebel — as she continues her fight against terminal ALS.
Owens didn’t bring her up for storyline reasons or to add drama to his comeback. He spoke from the heart, explaining that Rebel’s strength has stayed with him throughout his own long recovery. Her battle, he said, helped inspire him during the toughest parts of his journey back to the ring.
Owens Says Rebel’s Fight Inspired Him
“There’s somebody called Tanea Brooks, who’s known to wrestling fans as Rebel. She has not wrestled here, but some things are bigger than wrestling.”
Owens then praised the way Rebel has continued pushing forward despite everything she is facing.
“She’s currently battling ALS, and the way she’s doing it is so incredible. I looked at her and what she was going through, and the way she powered through it was truly inspirational.”
The message came during a major night for Owens, who made his surprise WWE return at WWE SummerSlam Night 2 after more than a year away. Nick Aldis added GUNTHER to the No. 1 Contender’s Match with Sami Zayn and Finn Bálor, then announced one final entrant. When Owens’ music hit, the crowd inside U.S. Bank Stadium erupted. Instead of keeping the spotlight entirely on himself, Owens used the moment to make sure Rebel’s name reached an even wider audience.
AEW will also honor Rebel with a special event titled “Rebel Heart” on September 9, adding another layer of support as she continues her fight.
Owens’ return was one of the most emotional moments of SummerSlam, but his decision to highlight Rebel gave the interview a deeper meaning. On a night built around surprises and big reactions, Owens made sure the focus briefly shifted to someone whose strength has inspired him far beyond the ring.
