Cody Rhodes Says He Won’t Let Anyone Rewrite His Wrestling Story

Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes recently opened up about how he views his legacy, making it clear that he intends to control his own narrative. The comments came during an episode of What Do You Wanna Talk About? With Cody Rhodes, where he was joined by WWE Hall of Famer Diamond Dallas Page.

During the discussion, Rhodes reflected on the career of his father, Dusty Rhodes, and how stories about him have been shaped over time. He referenced a video featuring Gary Hart, which highlighted Dusty’s influence during a booming period in wrestling. According to Rhodes, Hart described how talent went from modest lifestyles to significant financial success during that era, only for opinions to shift when business slowed.

Rhodes noted that Hart used the phrase “no loyalty” when describing how perceptions changed. He also tied that sentiment into broader industry dynamics, including mentions of Paul Heyman, before turning the focus to his own experiences.

Cody Rhodes Explains Why He Documents Everything

Rhodes said those lessons shaped how he approaches his own career. He explained that he now makes a conscious effort to document his journey to ensure that his story cannot be altered by others in the future.

“Maybe it is actually a little bit of the negativity, but it’s created in me. It’s why I try to document everything. It’s because I’m not having any motherfucker rewrite my story. And when you hear about st, like y’all weren’t there. I was there. If you need me to be the scapegoat for your bulls**t, go ahead.”*

“But, like, you won’t do that to me the same way you did it to him. And he didn’t have the luxury. One of the reasons I love this podcast. I tell people I don’t, but one of the reasons I love it, ’cause it’s out there. I can put this out there. You heard it. You know, and oh, it’s a Cody lie and all that. No, buddy. In this information age, the receipts are out there. Does it fit your narrative? No. Is your favorite wrestler not involved, but I was? Probably, but it’s why I am the way I am. And I’ll take it even further.”

Rhodes’ remarks highlight a broader concern about how wrestling history is remembered and retold. By sharing his perspective publicly, he aims to ensure that his contributions and experiences are preserved accurately, rather than filtered through secondhand accounts or shifting narratives.
