Bron Breakker has officially been cleared to return to in-ring competition following hernia surgery, but his absence from a featured WrestleMania 42 match is not due to medical concerns.
According to the Wrestling Observer, WWE made a deliberate creative decision to book Seth Rollins against Gunther at WrestleMania 42, rather than moving forward with the originally expected Rollins vs Breakker match.
Breakker has been out of action since suffering a serious hernia injury on the February 2 episode of WWE RAW. With both Breakker and Rollins working through recovery at the time, the assumption was that the two would collide at WrestleMania once they were ready. However, those plans shifted on the March 30 episode of RAW at Madison Square Garden.
During that show, Gunther made his return after several weeks off television. He interrupted Rollins as he prepared to deliver a stomp to Paul Heyman, dragging him out of the ring before locking in a sleeper hold and choking him out. Gunther then pointed directly at the WrestleMania sign, signaling his intentions. Shortly after, RAW General Manager Adam Pearce made the match official.
There had been speculation that Breakker’s health played a role in the change, but that has now been ruled out. Meltzer reported, “The idea of Rollins vs. Breakker is very much alive, but they are wanting the proper television build time. The entire storyline the past few weeks with Rollins and Paul Heyman was always to build to Gunther choking Rollins out in Madison Square Garden.”
WWE had also considered Rey Mysterio as a possible opponent for Gunther before the Hall of Famer suffered an injury, which left Gunther without a clear WrestleMania direction. Gunther has now stepped into a high-profile spot on the card instead.
Before his brief hiatus, Gunther had been positioned strongly, picking up notable wins over John Cena and AJ Styles during what WWE labeled a “Career Killer” run.
With Breakker now medically cleared, a future showdown between him and Rollins remains a possibility, but for WrestleMania 42, WWE is moving forward with Rollins vs Gunther as planned.
WrestleMania 42 will take place on April 18 and April 19 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.
