Triple H Reveals R-Truth Was Never Released – Netflix has released a preview clip to promote the upcoming season of “WWE: Unreal,” and the footage sheds light on R-Truth’s contract situation from 2025. The second season of the docuseries premieres tomorrow, January 20, and one of its main storylines focuses on WWE’s decision not to renew Truth’s contract last year.
The situation caused significant backlash at the time, as many fans believed Truth had been released. That reaction ultimately played a role in WWE bringing him back under a new agreement, despite the fact that his contract had simply expired.
In the clip, Paul “Triple H” Levesque explains WWE’s reasoning and states that the issue stemmed from a breakdown in communication during contract negotiations. According to Levesque, the two sides were far apart financially, and WWE believed allowing the deal to lapse might reopen discussions. Instead, the situation escalated publicly.
Levesque explains in the preview, “We got to a point in Truth’s run where his contract was coming up. When you are dealing with contracts and money and you’re very far apart in the numbers and communication breaks down, it’s very easy for both sides to read into the communications differently. ‘Okay, well, if you’re not going to come to us, then Truth, we’re going to let your contract lapse. Your contract is at the end. We’re not going to renew.’ Knowing that hopefully maybe this will force his hand to say, ‘Well, hold on a second. Can we talk?’ He immediately went out on social and said he was fired — which, he was never fired, contrary to prior belief. He was never not under contract with us.”
The clip also features brief comments from R-Truth himself, who said that being told his contract would not be renewed felt the same as being released. Brian “Road Dogg” James also appears and shares his perspective as both a close friend and former tag team partner. James described the decision as heartbreaking but acknowledged that it made business sense, noting Truth’s age.
Fan backlash and strong support from within the WWE locker room eventually led the company to reverse its decision. WWE President Nick Khan is credited with playing a key role in finalizing Truth’s return on a new long-term contract.
