Trick Williams Officially Joins SmackDown Roster – Two-time NXT Champion Trick Williams officially became a member of the WWE SmackDown roster during the January 2 episode, marking a decisive end to his brief free agency period. Williams had appeared sporadically on both RAW and SmackDown throughout 2025, but his announcement one week earlier that he was a free agent lasted just seven days before he made his choice.
Williams made his intentions clear during an in-ring segment featuring Sami Zayn. As Zayn addressed the crowd and spoke about his continued pursuit of the WWE Championship, Williams interrupted and confirmed that he was now a SmackDown superstar. He stated that his sights were also set on the WWE Championship, immediately placing himself into the main event conversation.
Zayn responded respectfully, acknowledging Williams’ accomplishments while delivering a pointed warning. You haven’t been humbled yet, Zayn told him, drawing a reaction from both Williams and the crowd. The exchange established an immediate competitive tension between the two.
Later in the show, Williams confronted SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis backstage, complaining about Zayn’s remarks. The interruption also brought Rey Fenix into the scene, with insults being exchanged between Williams and Zayn once again. Aldis stepped in and made a match official between Williams and Zayn for next week’s episode of SmackDown, giving Williams an immediate test in his first week on the brand.
Williams’ rise has been one of WWE’s most notable success stories in recent years. A former NFL hopeful, he began his wrestling training in 2018 with Combat Zone Wrestling before signing a WWE developmental contract in 2021. He initially gained momentum through his alliance with Carmelo Hayes, now the WWE United States Champion, before the two split and feuded.
Following that rivalry, Williams captured two NXT Championships and the NXT North American Championship, firmly establishing himself as the face of the brand. In 2025, he also held the TNA World Championship for several months, before losing the title to Mike Santana at Bound for Glory in October.
With his official move to SmackDown now complete, Williams enters 2026 positioned as a rising force with championship ambitions already front and center.
