SmackDown Moves to SyFy During Winter Olympics – WWE SmackDown will temporarily move networks throughout the month of February. Due to Winter Olympics coverage, the blue brand will air on SyFy for two consecutive weeks while its usual home, USA Network, carries Olympic programming.
SmackDown is scheduled to air on SyFy on Friday, February 13, and Friday, February 20. WWE will keep the same format during the move, with both episodes remaining three hours in length. No changes to start time or structure have been announced beyond the network shift.
The reason for the move is NBCUniversal’s coverage of the Winter Olympics, which will begin on February 6 and conclude on February 22 in Italy. Olympic events will air across USA Network and several other NBC-owned channels, prompting WWE to relocate SmackDown for those two weeks to avoid preemption.
The February 13 episode of SmackDown will broadcast live from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. That show is expected to follow WWE’s standard live format despite airing on a different network. One week later, the February 20 edition of SmackDown will take place at the FLA Live Arena in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Network shifts for WWE programming during Olympic coverage are not uncommon. WWE has previously moved SmackDown or RAW to alternate networks during major NBCUniversal broadcast commitments. SyFy, also owned by NBCUniversal, has served as a temporary home for WWE programming in similar situations.
At this time, there is no indication that SmackDown will be affected beyond those two dates. The show is expected to return to USA Network following the conclusion of the Winter Olympics. WWE has not announced any special presentation changes or alternate scheduling tied to the move.
Fans planning to watch SmackDown in February should note the temporary network change to avoid missing the live broadcasts. Further updates regarding SmackDown programming are expected as the Olympic coverage schedule approaches.
