Swerve Strickland Working Through Knee Injury – The ongoing feud between AEW Unified Champion Kazuchika Okada and former AEW World Champion Swerve Strickland has taken on a very real element heading into their match at Sunday’s Forbidden Door.
As reported on Wrestling Observer Radio by Dave Meltzer, Strickland’s knee injury that has been referenced on AEW television is not part of the storyline but a legitimate issue. According to Fightful Select, Strickland is currently dealing with a torn meniscus, an injury he originally sustained in 2019 while training at the WWE Performance Center. He was sidelined briefly at the time but returned to action after about a month.
This same injury has resurfaced and is affecting Strickland as he prepares to face Okada. While it remains unclear whether surgery will be required following Forbidden Door, AEW is reportedly relying on medical assistance from the Jacksonville Jaguars’ staff — another Khan family-owned organization — to help Strickland manage the injury.
The 34-year-old star has not competed in nearly a month, with his last match taking place on the July 23 edition of Dynamite, where he scored a victory over Hechicero.
Okada vs Strickland at Forbidden Door is one of the card’s most anticipated bouts, with the storyline now carrying an added layer of realism as Strickland works through his injury.
