Why The Young Bucks Lost EVP Roles – The high-stakes tag team match at AEW All In: Texas, which resulted in The Young Bucks being stripped of their on-screen Executive Vice President status, was reportedly designed to mark a significant shift in direction for the duo.
According to Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, AEW management felt it was time to move on from the long-running storyline of Matt and Nick Jackson as authority figures on television. The match, which saw The Young Bucks face off against Swerve Strickland and Will Ospreay, was structured specifically to close that chapter.
“The feeling was it had run its course and it was time to get them back to being a great wrestling tag team,” Meltzer wrote.
Interestingly, the report noted that an alternate finish had been seriously discussed. One version of the plan involved Strickland and Ospreay losing, which would have barred them from challenging for the AEW World Championship for an entire year. That scenario was considered as a potential long-term angle to build fan anticipation.
Ultimately, AEW President Tony Khan made the final call. While The Young Bucks reportedly pushed hard to take the loss themselves, Meltzer noted, “We do know The Young Bucks were pretty adamant about losing, but in the end it was going to be Khan’s decision.”
The result immediately shifted the company’s narrative. On the following AEW Dynamite, The Young Bucks were shown struggling to adjust to life without executive control, adding a storyline fallout to the match’s consequences.
Meanwhile, the win grants Swerve Strickland a guaranteed AEW World Title opportunity, though he has yet to announce when he’ll cash it in. His tag team partner, Will Ospreay, was written off TV later in the show with an injury angle, and no timetable has been revealed for his return.
The match signaled a clear transition for The Young Bucks, as AEW pivots to refocus them in the tag division while opening up main event possibilities for Strickland.
