AEW Star Says He Was Originally Set to Play Axiom in WWE – While A-Kid ultimately debuted as the masked superhero Axiom in WWE, it turns out that the character was originally developed with another wrestler in mind—current AEW star Blake Christian.
Christian recently appeared on Fightful’s In The Weeds podcast, where he confirmed longstanding rumors that he was slated to portray a superhero character during his time in WWE. He revealed that the concept had been in development for some time and was nearly brought to life during the early days of NXT 2.0.
“I believe we were setting it up for a little while,” Christian said. “I had just wrestled Dante Chen and there was a backstage [segment] and I was like, ‘Superhero, huh?’ They approached me when I first went and they were like, ‘We want this type of character.’ I’m open-minded for anything. Then, it didn’t happen.”
According to Christian, WWE revived the concept as NXT 2.0 launched, and it looked like the timing might finally be right.
“When 2.0 came around they were like, ‘We’re going to do it now. This is a perfect character for this show.’ I came up with a suit design and a name. It just didn’t happen. Well, it did happen, but it didn’t happen with me.”
When asked directly whether he was originally slated to play Axiom, Christian confirmed it.
“I was supposed to be, yes, I came up with all the stuff,” he said. “I think the person they gave it to is great and he’s done a great job, maybe even better than I could have done. I’m happy to see it still alive and doing as well as it’s doing.”
The Axiom character eventually debuted in July 2022 with A-Kid—now under a mask—taking on the role. The high-flying style and comic book-inspired presentation quickly became a staple of NXT programming.
Christian, who currently performs in All Elite Wrestling, appears to have no regrets about how things played out. His comments reflect both professional pride in helping develop the character and respect for the work A-Kid has done in bringing it to life.
