Rey Mysterio Eyes Summer Return Following Injury – Rey Mysterio is making progress in his recovery and expects to return to the ring by August after suffering a torn groin just before WrestleMania 41. The injury occurred during the final episode of SmackDown leading into the event, forcing Mysterio to withdraw from his scheduled match against El Grande Americano. In his place, Rey Fenix stepped in to compete.
The WWE Hall of Famer recently appeared on LA PLATICA, where he gave insight into how the injury happened—and it was far less dramatic than one might expect.
“So, I was explaining to someone yesterday that I tore my groin. He goes, ‘How did it happen? Was it when they pulled you?’ I said, ‘No…’ The guy that I was wrestling stood in front of me. He bailed out the ring underneath the bottom rope and I went to chase him and when I pushed off with my left leg, I just heard a (rip),” Mysterio explained. “Like, that’s it? I tore my groin like that? And yeah, usually it happens on the simplest sht.”*
While rehabbing the groin tear, Mysterio also underwent surgery to repair a damaged eardrum. Now in physical therapy, he confirmed that his recovery is going well and that he’s focused on returning by late summer.
“Good. Pretty good,” Mysterio said. “I started my PT. Not to mention, I had a busted eardrum as well so I fixed that during my time off. I’m on the road to recovery. I should be back hopefully by August.”
Mysterio is currently being advertised for WWE’s live events in Mexico, scheduled for late July.
