Update on Malakai Black’s AEW Status – Malakai Black’s run with AEW has reportedly come to an end, with speculation now focusing on his contract status and next career move. Although some sources suggest Black could become a free agent as early as March 2025, his contract was originally set to run until 2027, according to comments made by AEW CEO Tony Khan. Despite the reports, Black remains listed on AEW’s official roster page. His last match for the promotion took place at Full Gear 2024.
Wade Keller of PWTorch reports that WWE is monitoring the situation closely. Keller noted that influential figures within WWE are strong advocates for Black’s return, believing he could become a top singles star. Black is said to be more receptive to working under Paul “Triple H” Levesque’s creative leadership compared to his experience with Vince McMahon.
However, Black’s time in AEW was reportedly marked by backstage challenges. Colleagues were frustrated with what they perceived as his reluctance to “do business,” which included a hesitance to take losses and frequent claims of injury. Additionally, it’s reported that Black and Tony Khan never developed a strong working relationship.
Despite rumors of burnout and potential retirement over the past year, Black remains active on the independent circuit. He is scheduled to compete at Havoc & Haze 9 for Coastal Championship Wrestling in Tampa, Florida, on January 11, where he will face Irion.
With uncertainty surrounding his next steps, Black’s departure from AEW has fueled speculation of a WWE return or other new ventures.
