The online rumors and shifting betting lines ultimately meant nothing in the main event as Roman Reigns takes down Penta to retain his World Heavyweight Championship live from Arena CDMX.
Penta earned his shot by sweeping through an eight-man contenders tournament that began in August. Entering to a thunderous hometown reception, the challenger pushed the champion to his limits, but Reigns ultimately silenced the crowd during the September 14 episode of WWE RAW from Mexico City.
War Of Attrition Inside Arena CDMX
The match began with high tension as Reigns demanded silence from the crowd, only for the arena to roar even louder. Following an early exchange of shoulder tackles and chops, Penta took control with a headstand hesitation dropkick and a flip dive to the outside.
Momentum shifted when Penta missed a chop and struck the ring post, allowing Reigns to send him crashing into the barrier and take control with heavy Irish whips and corner strikes.
As the physical toll mounted, Penta mounted a furious comeback:
- High-Impact Offense: Penta executed a wrap-around bulldog, a lungblower, and a springboard tornado DDT for consecutive near falls.
- Targeting The Arm: Penta locked in Sacrifice to injure the champion’s right arm. The injury visibly hindered Reigns, stopping him from executing his Never Ending Story clotheslines and delaying his signature strikes.
- Brutal Counterattacks: After back-and-forth counters on the apron, Reigns powerbombed Penta through the announce table. Penta recovered to block a Superman Punch and land the Penta Driver for a razor-thin two-count.
Epic Finishing Sequence Extinguishes Local Hype
The closing stretch saw both men trade their absolute best moves. Reigns landed a Superman Punch, only for Penta to dodge a Spear attempt and hit a springboard Canadian Destroyer.
Reigns grabbed a microphone mid-match to demand that Mexico City acknowledge him, but Penta cut him off with a series of superkicks. However, as Penta attempted a final springboard maneuver off the ropes, Reigns caught him mid-air with a brutal Superman Punch, immediately following up with a Spear to secure the pinfall victory.
Penta was so good during the match, and this bout certainly cemented his status as a main-eventer. But as I personally said during my last Thorns, there was no chance of him winning the title. Not today.
The work rate in this match was exceptional, and credit goes to both men for building believable drama around the arm injury narrative.
The defense marked the first time Reigns has put a world championship on the line on free television since June 2022.
