Royce Keys Sidelined Indefinitely

Royce Keys has been ruled out indefinitely after suffering a bruised larynx and cervical strain following Jacob Fatu’s brutal attack on the post SummerSlam episode of WWE RAW. Michael Cole provided the injury update during the August 10 broadcast, confirming that Keys is not currently cleared to return to action.

The Royce Keys injury follows a violent Street Fight against Jacob Fatu that ended with more damage after the official finish. Keys was already beaten after Fatu made him submit to the Tongan Death Grip, but Fatu continued his assault once the match had ended.

Royce Keys Injury Adds More Heat To Rivalry

During the post-match attack, Fatu placed a steel chair around Keys’ neck and then drove into him with a powerful hip attack in the corner. The assault gave the segment a much more serious tone and added another chapter to the growing tension between the two former allies.

The attack also provided the reason for Keys’ current absence from WWE programming. After RAW went off the air, WWE Digital Exclusive footage showed medical personnel attending to a bloodied and coughing Keys. He was placed on a stretcher and taken from the arena for further medical attention.

The injury update came one week after Keys and Fatu competed in the Street Fight. Fatu controlled the closing moments of the match and secured the submission victory with the Tongan Death Grip. His decision to continue attacking Keys after the bell, however, made it clear that the rivalry had become personal.

According to a report from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer stated that the injury angle is part of the storyline and is not an injury cover angle. That means the television presentation is being used to explain Keys’ absence rather than suggesting that he is dealing with an undisclosed real-life injury.

Keys’ absence comes at an important point in his WWE run. The 41-year-old signed with WWE in January before making his Royal Rumble debut. He later made his television debut on SmackDown more than two months after arriving with the company.

Only two days before the Street Fight, Keys had been involved in a major six-man tag team match at SummerSlam. He teamed with LA Knight and Solo Sikoa to defeat Jacob Fatu and The Usos. The quick change from a victory at SummerSlam to being stretchered out of the arena on RAW has added another dramatic development to the storyline.

For now, WWE has not provided a timetable for Keys’ return. The company has only confirmed that he is out indefinitely following the injuries announced by Michael Cole.

With Keys sidelined, attention will remain on Fatu and the next stage of their rivalry. Fatu’s actions have established him as a dangerous threat, while Keys’ absence leaves his side of the story temporarily unresolved. WWE can now use the injury angle to build anticipation for Keys’ eventual return without putting a specific date on his comeback.

Until WWE announces otherwise, Royce Keys will remain off television as Jacob Fatu continues his path of destruction on WWE RAW.
