The tournament to determine the next number one contender to World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns officially began on the Aug. 10 episode of WWE RAW, with Penta securing his place in the semifinals.
Penta defeated Laredo Kid in the opening match of the tournament after delivering a Mexican Destroyer. The finish came after Laredo Kid missed a torneo from the top rope, allowing Penta to capitalize and score the victory.
The match also marked Penta’s WWE RAW debut. The former WWE Intercontinental Champion now moves forward in the tournament and will face the winner of the upcoming Psycho Clown vs. La Parka match in the semifinals.
Penta Advances in World Heavyweight Title Tournament
Psycho Clown and La Parka are scheduled to meet during this Saturday’s episode of AAA, with the winner earning a place in the next round against Penta. The tournament is bringing several established names into the competition as WWE looks to determine who will receive a World Heavyweight Championship opportunity against Roman Reigns.
The remaining first-round matches are scheduled to take place on next Monday’s episode of WWE RAW. Dragon Lee is set to face El Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr., while Rey Fenix will compete against El Fiscal.
However, Dragon Lee’s participation in the tournament has already become uncertain following an incident on Monday’s show. Lee defeated Dominik Mysterio in an impromptu match, but was later taken out by Big Cass.
The situation could potentially lead to a change in the tournament bracket. Dominik Mysterio had complained to Rey Mysterio earlier in the show about not being included in the tournament. If Dragon Lee is unable to compete, Dominik could potentially become his replacement.
No official decision regarding a replacement has been announced at this point. WWE will therefore need to clarify Lee’s status before his scheduled first-round match against El Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr.
The tournament will continue over the next several episodes of WWE RAW and AAA, with the competitors fighting for the opportunity to challenge Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship.
The final tournament winner is scheduled to receive that title opportunity on the Monday, Sept. 14 episode of WWE RAW in Mexico City, Mexico. Penta has already secured his place in the semifinals, putting him one step closer to a potential World Heavyweight Championship match.
With several first-round matches still to come, the tournament bracket remains open. The next rounds will determine whether Penta can continue his run or if another competitor will emerge as the next challenger to Reigns.
