Seth Rollins is set to face Roman Reigns once again, but the upcoming WWE SummerSlam match comes with a surprising piece of history behind it. Despite both stars spending over a decade at the top of WWE, their one-on-one encounters have been limited.
Seth Rollins vs Roman Reigns at SummerSlam
Rollins will challenge Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam, adding another chapter to their long-running rivalry. While the two have shared the ring many times in multi-man matches and faction storylines, singles bouts between them have been rare.
Speaking with Brad Williams on The Rich Eisen Show, Rollins pointed out just how uncommon these matches have been.
“One on one, Roman and I have only had, I want to say this will be our third singles pay-per-view match ever,” Rollins said. “We had one in 2022 at the Royal Rumble, which I won. Then we had one in 2016 at Money in the Bank, which I also won.”
Rollins continued by expressing surprise at that statistic, especially considering how closely their careers have been tied together since their days as members of The Shield.
“But for two guys who’ve been as prominently featured as we are in WWE for the last 14 years, to only have three is pretty wild, I would say.”
The history between Rollins and Reigns dates back to their time alongside Dean Ambrose in The Shield, a group that played a major role in shaping WWE’s main event scene for years. While they have often crossed paths, singles matches between them have remained a rarity, making each encounter feel more significant.
Their SummerSlam clash will see Reigns defend the World Heavyweight Championship against Rollins in what is expected to be one of the top matches on the card. With both competitors holding victories in their previous one-on-one meetings, the upcoming bout carries added weight.
WWE SummerSlam is scheduled to take place on August 1 and August 2 at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
