Gunther Explains His Unconventional WWE Rise and Why He Refuses to Use a Catchphrase

Gunther recently reflected on his path through WWE and why he has never embraced the traditional “catchphrase” approach that many top stars rely on. Speaking with Rompipallone, the former Intercontinental Champion discussed his transition to NXT, his place in the locker room, and how his journey differs from the typical WWE blueprint.

Gunther said he never followed the usual WWE trajectory. He spent most of his career off the radar, which he believes helped him arrive in WWE already fully formed. Because of that, he sometimes finds it difficult to give advice to younger talent about navigating the WWE system. He said he feels like he belongs, but at times still sees himself as an outsider. Even so, he enjoys the unique position he’s in and the perspective it gives him.

“The thing is I didn’t have the typical WWE career, I would say, because I’ve been off the radar for most of my career which helped me in WWE. Basically come in and I had figured myself out already. And yeah, that’s why it’s sometimes hard to give people advice on how to play the game in the WWE system and stuff because I had my very special journey when it came to that but it’s also, that’s something you grow into as well over the time. Sometimes I feel like obviously I do feel like I belong, but sometimes I feel like I’m still a little bit of an outcast when it comes to that. But I think it’s a very interesting position I’m in. So I’m enjoying it how it is.”

He also explained why he has never adopted a catchphrase. Gunther said he prefers to let his in‑ring work define him rather than leaning on slogans or branding. He joked that he leaves that part to people like Cody Rhodes, who can give themselves marketable names that look good on merchandise. Gunther said that’s not who he is, and his focus will always remain on what happens inside the ropes.

“The man without phrases I think. There’s a reason why I don’t have any catchphrases or something like that, because I leave that to people like Cody Rhodes who can give themselves all kinds of cool names, cool sounding names that’s easy for the marketing department to use and put on t-shirts. That’s not me, I’m not interested in that part. I’m interested in what happens in the ring, that’s my number one.”

Gunther is set to challenge Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship at Clash in Italy on May 31. Earlier this month, he blindsided Rhodes to set the tone for the match and made it clear he is chasing the top prize with a new level of intensity. Their showdown in Turin is now one of the most anticipated matches of the event.
