AEW star Buddy Matthews has stepped back into a wrestling ring after being out of action for close to 15 months, and he has now shared when fans can expect him to compete again.
Matthews made his appearance during the opening night of World Series Wrestling’s Rise Against tour at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre in Australia. The moment came right after Donovan Dijak picked up a win in a four-way match that also featured Moose, Matt Hayter, and Matt Riddle for the WSW Championship. As Dijak celebrated, Matthews entered wearing a black hoodie and holding a steel chair. He attacked Dijak and struck him several times before taking control of the situation.
After the assault, Matthews addressed the crowd and made it clear that his in-ring return is not far away. He confirmed that he is still not medically cleared at this time but expects to be ready by October. He also used the moment to remind fans of his past achievements and hinted at his goals once he is fully cleared.
“In case you’ve forgotten my name is Buddy Matthews! And I’m the guy that kicked down the door for every Australian to make it overseas. Now let’s get one thing straight, I might not be cleared now but in October I will be. And I might just take all the gold because hell’s frozen over and you just can’t stop the unstoppable,” Matthews said.
His absence dates back to February 2025, when he suffered an ankle injury during his entrance at AEW Grand Slam Australia. Despite dealing with ligament damage and nerve issues in his foot, Matthews still went ahead with his scheduled match against Kazuchika Okada for the AEW Continental Championship. That decision led to a long recovery period, keeping him away from competition until now.
This latest appearance signals that Matthews is nearing full fitness. While he is not yet cleared, his October target gives a clear window for his official return to action.
