Thekla Calls AEW Women’s Title The Peak Of Her Wrestling Career

Thekla Calls AEW Women’s Title The Peak Of Her Wrestling Career

Thekla believes she has officially reached the top of her wrestling career following her rise to becoming AEW Women’s World Champion.

Back in February, “The Toxic Spider” captured the AEW Women’s World Championship by defeating Kris Statlander in a strap match. Now, she is preparing for another major defense at AEW Double or Nothing, where she will defend the title in a fatal four-way match against Kris Statlander, Hikaru Shida, and Jamie Hayter.

During an interview with Westwood One Sports, Thekla was asked whether she currently feels she is at the peak of her career.

“Yeah. Yeah. I think the AEW Women’s World Championship is a pretty prestigious title all over wrestling, but especially in the States,” Thekla said. “So I think this is probably the peak for a lot of people. I think in a lot of people’s eyes, yeah. Me personally, sure. Yeah. Gold is gold, and that’s the shiniest one, and it’s the heaviest one, honestly, so far.”

Thekla Talks AEW Title, Blood In Wrestling, And Mercedes Mone

Thekla also joked about the physical weight of the AEW Women’s World Championship belt itself.

“It’s really fucking heavy,” she said while comparing the official title belt to replica versions. “When I was handed mine the first time, I was like, ‘oh god damn.’ It’s a little workout getting in and out of that ring with the title.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Thekla discussed blood in professional wrestling and explained why she has intentionally avoided bleeding in AEW so far despite competing in violent matches.

According to Thekla, blood can create major drama and intensity in matches, but only when used carefully.

“I think you gotta be careful with that shit because it is so potent,” Thekla explained. “It can create so much drama and it really can enhance something. But when you see it all the fucking time, it loses the magic.”

She added that while she enjoys hardcore wrestling elements, she has deliberately protected that aspect of her own character since arriving in AEW.

“If you noticed what I’ve been doing, I’ve been in matches with blood here since I’ve been in AEW, but me, I haven’t been bleeding. I’m saving myself. Also, I’m the champ.”

Thekla also briefly discussed Hikaru Shida while playing a name association game during the interview.

“I think she’s a sneaky snake,” Thekla said while teasing anticipation for how Shida could potentially manipulate situations involving Kris Statlander.

Meanwhile, when Mercedes Moné was brought up, Thekla refused to fully comment but hinted there may eventually be a larger story connected to the two.

“That’s a tough one,” Thekla said. “I’m not gonna answer that because I think there will be a day where I’m going to reveal stuff that is interesting about me in relation to Mercedes.”

The comments continue building intrigue around Thekla’s growing role in AEW as she heads into another major title defense at Double or Nothing.
