Finn Balor Babyface Turn? Finn Balor’s defeat to CM Punk at WWE Elimination Chamber may have marked the start of a major character shift. While Balor failed to regain the title, the focus after the match centered on the absence of The Judgment Day. The group did not interfere, and Balor never called for assistance.
For years, The Judgment Day has played a key role in Balor’s victories. Outside help often shaped the outcome of his biggest matches. At Elimination Chamber, that pattern changed. Balor chose to compete on his own, and the clean loss stood out.
According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, this could be the beginning of a long-expected babyface turn. Meltzer pointed to Balor’s actions before, during, and after the match as signs of a shift.
“Well, he did do the handshake and there was no JD and Dom and he never called for them. So that’s the story. The story is, is that he’s going to be, I think that they’re finally going to get to him and Dom. You know, I mean, him and Dom were scheduled for SummerSlam. I mean, that’s when the match was first scheduled to happen. And I think that they just dragged it out because Judgment Day was doing so well. They didn’t want to rush it.”
Balor also delivered promos leading into the title match that focused on proving himself without help. That approach was different from his past presentation. Meltzer noted this detail as important.
“But lately, you know, Finn’s been certainly building towards being a baby face. He did those baby face promos leading into this match. You know, ‘I have to win it on my own’ and all that, which I thought was just gonna be one of those things where they come and interfere later in the match.”
Instead of interference, Balor lost clean and shook Punk’s hand. The gesture reinforced the change in tone. Meltzer added that a future feud with Dominik Mysterio could follow once the split from The Judgment Day becomes official.
If this direction continues, Balor’s loss at Elimination Chamber may be remembered as the first clear step toward a new chapter.
