CM Punk Praises Lexis King and Compares Him to His Own Early Career – CM Punk believes Lexis King has the tools to accomplish big things in WWE, and the World Heavyweight Champion sees more than a little of his younger self in the second-generation star. During a recent interview with Complex, Punk reflected on his own rise in the industry and explained why King’s journey reminds him of where he once stood.
Punk noted that King’s path is not defined by being the son of Brian Pillman, but rather by how audiences initially perceive his character. “Lexis King, I think, is in line to do great things,” Punk said, before explaining that the extra pressure comes from presentation rather than lineage. “I think a guy like Lexis King is more like – is viewed more like me, back in the day, where like they look at him like – they’re like, ‘Oh, okay?’ You know? ‘I don’t know if I – I don’t know if I get it.’”
According to Punk, that skepticism is often what separates those who fade away from those who evolve into long-term stars. He praised King’s work ethic and commitment to improvement, suggesting that perseverance will ultimately define his career. “When it’s time to hang up the boots, they can look back at his career and think like, ‘This is a guy who maybe I didn’t think much of when I first saw. He put the work in, he busted his a*, and he became really, really good,’”* Punk said.
Punk also broadened the discussion to WWE’s developmental system, expressing confidence in the current state of NXT and the steady flow of talent reaching the main roster. He described the system as overflowing with potential, stating, “The pipeline is just jampacked full with people.” Punk specifically mentioned Oba Femi, Carmelo Hayes, and Trick Williams as standouts who represent the depth of WWE’s future.
With his own career now in its veteran phase, Punk admitted that time may be his biggest obstacle. “I’m gonna run out of road before I wind up having chances to work with all these guys,” he added, underscoring just how strong he believes the next generation has become.
For Punk, Lexis King stands as a prime example of that future. Much like Punk once did, King appears poised to prove doubters wrong through consistency, growth, and sheer determination.
