Yet Another Update on WrestleMania 42 Plans

Yet Another Update on WrestleMania 42 Plans – WWE has once again adjusted its creative direction for WrestleMania 42, and this time the shift is significant. According to the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the company has moved away from its long‑standing plan to headline the event with a third Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns match.

Dave Meltzer reports that Paul “Triple H” Levesque reconsidered the trajectory from the Royal Rumble to WrestleMania and ultimately decided that another Rhodes–Reigns showdown — the third in four years — risked exhausting the audience. The decision to pivot, along with the call to put the WWE Championship on Drew McIntyre, was made within a tight 48‑hour window.

Two new main‑event scenarios are now being discussed internally:
Cody Rhodes vs. Drew McIntyre
Cody Rhodes vs. Drew McIntyre vs. Jacob Fatu in a triple threat

Meltzer notes that Roman Reigns is expected to be “the odd man out” of the WWE title picture this year. He is scheduled to return at the Royal Rumble, where his creative direction should become clearer.

Interestingly, both Rhodes and McIntyre reportedly pushed for McIntyre to win the WWE Championship. The belief is that Rhodes entering WrestleMania as the challenger — rather than the defending champion — creates a fresher, more compelling narrative.

McIntyre, now the new WWE Champion, is set to appear on tonight’s SmackDown in London. His ongoing storyline with Jacob Fatu and Cody Rhodes is expected to continue building toward whatever WrestleMania 42’s final main event becomes.
