Santos Escobar Makes Surprise Return at AAA FOX Debut as El Hijo del Fantasma – Santos Escobar made a surprise return to the wrestling spotlight on Saturday night, appearing without advance notice at Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide’s debut broadcast on FOX in Latin America. The appearance marked Escobar’s first public involvement in a major wrestling storyline in roughly six months and immediately reignited his rivalry with El Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr.
The moment unfolded when the AAA Latin American Champion was approached by an individual wearing the iconic El Hijo del Fantasma mask, a look closely associated with Escobar’s pre-WWE career. Wagner initially embraced the masked figure, only to be attacked moments later. The mystery man then removed the mask, revealing himself as Santos Escobar, sending the live crowd into a frenzy.
Following the attack, Escobar addressed the audience and later expanded on his mindset in a post-show video. Without offering clarity on his immediate future, Escobar focused on the circumstances surrounding his prolonged absence from television and his frustration with the lack of attention he received during that time. “You want to know something about me now? For six months, I was away, not one question,” Escobar said. “You want to know something about me? Now it’s on my time.” His comments pointed toward a more confrontational and self-focused edge moving forward.
Escobar’s return comes after months of uncertainty regarding his contractual status. In October 2025, reports indicated that his WWE deal had expired, leading to his removal from the company’s internal roster and sparking speculation about his long-term future. Shortly thereafter, it was reported that Escobar had signed a new contract with WWE, though he remained off television until this AAA appearance. His last match took place on July 27, 2025, at a Supershow Mexico house show, while his most recent televised bout occurred in June at the AAA x WWE Worlds Collide event.
Saturday’s attack also directly tied into Escobar’s previous encounters with Wagner. At Worlds Collide on June 7, Escobar teamed with Angel and Berto to defeat Wagner, Pagano, and Psycho Clown in a six-man tag team match. By disguising himself with the El Hijo del Fantasma mask, Escobar leaned into lucha libre tradition and personal history to advance the rivalry.
With Escobar now back in action and under contract with WWE, attention has shifted toward the Royal Rumble Premium Live Event on January 31, 2026. Speculation has emerged regarding a possible return to American television in the Men’s Royal Rumble match, though no confirmation has been made.
