Rusev Wants to Retire John Cena – Rusev has made it clear that if anyone should retire John Cena, it should be him. Fresh off his WWE return, the former United States Champion spoke with Voxcatch and said he would welcome — and dominate — one last showdown with Cena.
“Oh, that would be absolutely yes, sir… Will I hurt him? Yes, sir. Will I beat him? Yes, sir,” Rusev said. “So maybe I’m not going to be an appropriate opponent for a farewell John Cena because you’re going to hurt him too much. That’s just what I do.”
Cena wrestled his WWE farewell match on the September 5 edition of SmackDown in Chicago, closing the book on a 20-plus year career. For Rusev, however, the story isn’t finished. He believes there’s poetic justice in being Cena’s last opponent, pointing out that Cena once handed him his first major loss on WWE’s biggest stage.
“Well, I think he’s going to be a great passing of the torch if I just get to beat him,” Rusev continued. “Uh, I mean, yeah, that would be a fantastic farewell for him, you know, because he started my career, now I can end his, which is going to be very appropriate and—and karma always strikes back, you know, at the end of the day.”
The two men famously clashed at WrestleMania 31 in 2015, where Cena ended Rusev’s undefeated streak and captured the United States Championship. A decade later, Rusev now sees himself as the one who should close Cena’s career for good.
Whether WWE moves forward with the idea remains uncertain, but Rusev’s challenge has been issued loud and clear.
