Cody Rhodes Discusses Trusting WWE Creative Team – Undisputed WWE Championship contender Cody Rhodes recently offered insight into how much creative input he has in his WWE storylines and how much he trusts the process behind the scenes.
During an interview with WFAN, “The American Nightmare” explained that while he has earned the ability to provide feedback and even make changes if necessary, one of the most rewarding aspects of his current WWE run has been placing faith in the company’s creative direction.
“They’re really great about it. When I say ‘they,’ I mean Triple H, Nick Khan, and The Rock — they’re very good about knowing that I’ve had an education in this and that I have my own opinions on what I should maybe be doing,” Rhodes said. “But honestly, coming back here, one of the greatest gifts in WWE has been being able to say, ‘You guys tell me.’… I may be the quarterback of WWE, but you’re telling me the play, and I have to trust you.”
Rhodes likened his position to that of a quarterback in football — capable of calling an audible when needed, but still dependent on the coaching staff for the game plan. He praised the WWE creative team and longtime producers featured in the WWE: Unreal Netflix docuseries, noting their exceptional experience and vision.
“In the Netflix show, you’re seeing people like Michael Hayes, Mr. Heyman — these are far greater minds than I am,” Rhodes continued. “I’m not afraid to ask, ‘Tell me where you’re running with this.’ Yes, I think I’ve earned the ability to call an audible when I really need to, but I rarely do it. Because I want to see if you were right — and man, if you were right, I want to know how… honestly, nine times out of ten, that crew is right.”
Rhodes’ confidence in the creative team has helped elevate him into one of WWE’s top stars. He’s set to headline this weekend’s SummerSlam in a Street Fight against John Cena for the Undisputed WWE Championship. Both Rhodes and Cena are expected to appear on tonight’s go-home edition of Friday Night SmackDown in Newark, New Jersey, for one final confrontation before their highly anticipated clash.
