According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, WWE’s internal lineup as of late June indicates that the two world title bouts will serve as the respective main events for Saturday and Sunday.
GUNTHER vs. CM Punk Slated to Main Event Night One
The World Heavyweight Championship is expected to close out the first night of SummerSlam. As per Meltzer, GUNTHER will defend the title against CM Punk in the Saturday night main event.
This marks Punk’s first major title match since his return to WWE in late 2023, and it will be his first one-on-one match for the World Heavyweight Title since the current championship was introduced.
Cena vs. Rhodes Reportedly Set for Night Two Main Event
The main event of night two is expected to be the Street Fight for the Undisputed WWE Championship, featuring champion Cody Rhodes defending against John Cena. WWE has heavily promoted the rivalry between the two, including last week’s heated contract signing on SmackDown. The confrontation ended in a chaotic brawl, setting the tone for what promises to be an emotionally charged main event on Sunday.
While this report reflects WWE’s internal direction as of late June, Meltzer cautioned that plans are always subject to change. WWE has not officially confirmed the match order, but with less than three weeks to go, fans can likely expect more announcements and developments on weekly television.
WWE SmackDown this Friday will continue the build to Cena vs. Rhodes, as fallout from the contract signing is expected to unfold on the blue brand. Meanwhile, RAW will likely showcase more of the feud between GUNTHER and CM Punk as the company heads toward SummerSlam weekend at MetLife Stadium.
