Update on Wardlow’s AEW Status – AEW star remains off TV despite being medically cleared, with a return delayed due to non-wrestling commitments
Wardlow has been absent from AEW programming for over a year, with his last in-ring appearance taking place on the March 13, 2024, “Big Business” episode of AEW Dynamite. That night, he challenged Samoa Joe for the AEW World Championship in a losing effort. Shortly after, Wardlow went on the shelf with what was believed to be a torn labrum injury sustained in spring 2024.
Adding to his setbacks, Wardlow revealed in April 2024 that he was involved in a car accident. According to a report from Fightful Select, the accident did not cause the labrum injury but did worsen it. There had also been speculation about a knee injury, which Matt Taven mentioned during an appearance on the Stick to Wrestling Podcast, though Fightful’s reporting did not confirm any additional physical issues beyond the torn labrum.
Wardlow, a three-time TNT Champion, has since recovered and is now cleared to compete. However, he has not returned to AEW TV due to ongoing work outside of wrestling. Earlier this year, Wardlow secured what was described as a “very appropriate and special” television role, and both he and AEW President Tony Khan agreed that a return to TV wouldn’t be logical if he would have to step away again soon after.
Despite being backstage at AEW Revolution in March, there were no plans for him to appear on the show due to his recovery and outside obligations. The belief within AEW is that Wardlow has a “significant amount of time” left on his contract and is expected to remain with the company for the foreseeable future.
Wardlow has been part of AEW since 2019 and first gained attention as the bodyguard of MJF. His breakout moment came when he turned on MJF and began a dominant singles run, which included three reigns as TNT Champion. Prior to his hiatus, he was aligned with the Undisputed Kingdom faction.
While there’s currently no timeline for his return, “Mr. Mayhem” remains under contract and cleared to wrestle. It appears AEW is willing to wait for the right time to reintroduce him when his outside commitments wind down.
